EXPLANATION
OF SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Eyelid
Lift
The
main focuses of the face are the eyes. Sagging eyelid skin
and puffy bags obstruct the eyes and are signs of aging. They
give the face a tired look. An eyelid lift removes the excessive
eyelid skin and fat.
The
eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, can be performed under local
or general anesthesia. It involves making an incision in the
upper eyelid crease and removing an ellipse of skin. The underlying
fat is also removed and then the incision is closed. The lower
lid incision is made inside the lower eyelid or just below
the lower eyelashes. The puffy fat bags are removed and occasionally
a small amount of skin. Postoperatively there is a small amount
of bruising and swelling of the eyelids, which take one to
two weeks to resolve.

Lasers
Lasers are
now the preferred method of skin enhancement and cosmetic
surgery, and have replaced conventional surgery for improving
appearance on selected patients.
Recent
advances in carbon dioxide laser technology have made skin
rejuvenation with the CO2 laser a practical reality. Lasers
work by emitting a powerful beam of light, which causes a
superficial burn of the skin. As new living cells replace
layers of dead skin cells, the skin tightens, and grows back
smoother and wrinkle-free. Among the advantages of laser surgery
are that there is usually no need for hospitalization, there
is no cutting or blood involved, and there is normally no
scarring.
Lasers
are effective for treating sun-damaged skin, mild acne scarring,
age spots and skin discoloration’s and many facial scars and
wrinkles. Laser treatment may be performed on the whole face
or designated facial areas such as around the eyes or the
mouth. It can be carried out under local or general anesthesia,
depending on the specific needs of each individual.
Liposuction
Liposuction
has become one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed
today. Liposuction involves the removal of excess fat from
the body in order to contour a better shape. Safety and outstanding
results have made liposuction the preferred method for removing
fat from the hips, thighs, abdomen, and neck. Other areas
include the arms, knees, buttocks, calves and ankles. In fact,
any area where there is more than “an inch in the pinch” of
fat present, liposuction can be performed.
Liposuction
is not an alternative to weight reduction but it can be very
effective on removing fat from areas that do not respond to
diet and exercise. Large amounts of fat can now safely be
removed giving the patient a “jump start” in their weight
reduction. Patients can become more motivated after liposuction
since they can see a noticeable difference immediately. Most
liposuction procedures are performed under general anesthesia
to allow the surgeon to suction and contour more while the
patients are more comfortable.
The procedure
is performed on an outpatient basis. A small incision about
3 mm is made and a narrow tube (cannula) is inserted into
this incision. The surgeon then manipulates the cannula back
and forth to loosen the fat and then it is suctioned away
by a vacuum. After
surgery the patient wears a girdle to help smooth out the
areas suctioned postoperatively.

Breast
lift & Reduction
Breast
lift and or Reduction is designed to correct sagging breasts.
A breast lift removes only the excessive breast skin and not
breast tissue while the reduction removes both skin and breast
tissue. Breasts often begin to sag after pregnancy or weight
loss. The breast lift can restore the breast to it’s previous
position. Usually the nipple/areola needs to be raised to
a higher position and then excessive skin is removed from
the lower breast. There is an incision around the areola and
down the lower center of the breast and usually in the breast
fold. The scarring will usually fade after several months.
Recovery is within one week and full healing takes four weeks
before vigorous exercise can take place.

Tummy
Tuck
This is the
traditional procedure for excessive and loose skin of the
abdominal wall. The tummy tuck deals with all three components
of the abdominal wall. The excessive abdominal skin and fat
are removed. Also the muscles are tightened and restored to
their pre-pregnancy position. The procedure is performed by
making a lower abdominal horizontal incision and accessing
the excessive lower abdominal skin and fat. Liposuction can
be added to contour waist and hips when needed. The length
of the scar depends on how much sagging skin is present. Recovery
is about one week before returning to work and about four
weeks for full exercise.

Facelift
A facelift
is designed to rejuvenate the face by eliminating wrinkles
and sagging skin. The procedure is usually performed under
local or general anesthesia to provide maximum comfort to
the patient. Incisions are made in the hairline and along
the front of the ear. The skin and fat is elevated. The underlying
muscle and fascia is tightened. The neck is suctioned of excessive
fat and loose muscle is tightened in the neck.
The traditional
facelift tightens the cheeks and neck. The procedure can be
performed as early as the mid-thirties up to the eighties
depending on the elasticity of the skin and the health of
the patient. Sometimes the face can be divided into the mid-face
and neck. Each of these areas can be addressed individually
but usually the entire face looks better when lifted as a
unit. Recovery is one to two weeks to allow swelling and discoloration
to resolve.

Breast
Augmentation
One of the
most popular areas of plastic surgery is breast augmentation.
It is performed to enhance the size and sharp of the breast.
This improves a women’s ability to wear clothes and her self-esteem.
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia
on an outpatient basis. The implants are filled with saline
and are placed under the glands through an incision made on
the breast fold or around the nipple. Breast implants come
in all sizes and two different shapes, round or oval.
